If you've spent some time with the Major and Minor Triad Inversions, we can start putting the pieces together.
Now, let's put our C and Dm triads to use!
Before we go any further, take a few minutes and try to recall as many triad shapes as you can for both Major and Minor.
Once you're warmed up, take a look at the diagram below.
Here we have all 12 of the triad shapes laid out for C and Dm, all across the fretboard.
I've also included the 7th, just for completeness.
Now we're going to try approaching improvisation with this in mind. Notice that the entire C scale is present in the diagram above. Start anywhere on the fretboard, play a C triad, and then play a few notes in key, working your way over to a Dm triad. Then, work your way back to a C. Try to move around the fretboard to different locations. It's fine to jump to other spots too.
When you feel relatively comfortable, we can introduce a backing track. Record yourself playing a C-Dm progression - go slow - you want to give yourself lots of time to change.
