This seemingly simple exercise will greatly challenge your fretting hand control!Â
Based on the tab alone, this exercise seems almost exactly like the Caterpillar. There's a big difference, though.
When playing the Spider, you keep your fingers pressing down their fret until it's time to move. That means only one of your fingers are moving at any one time, and the other three are still engaged holding the fret.
For example, while your index finger moves to the 5th fret of a new string, your other three will remain fretting the 6th, 7th, and 8th frets.
This is pretty tricky at first! You might feel like your fingers have a mind of their own, moving before it's time. It also keeps quite a lot of tension in the hand throughout the exercise, so take care not to press down unnecessarily hard.
