From The Start
Laufey
Laufey is a modern mainstream artist that's managing to incorporate a lot of jazz technique into her songs.
Let's take a quick look at one of her most famous songs!
The song opens with the main motif, we'll hear this repeated throughout.
And now we move on to the Verse.
This is all we will cover here as the whole song is built off these chords played with some slight variation.
Could you identify the chord progression? It's based on a ii-V-I, but extends into a iii-VI-ii-V-I in the back half.
We're almost diatonic here, but the Bb7b13 (6x677x) chord takes us out. That's a Secondary Dominant leading to the ii.
Essentially, we're daisy chaining 2-5-1's to get back down to our root! We saw this in Autumn Leaves as well.
For a challenge, try naming all the chords used above.
There you have it. As usual, soft jazz songs tend to pack a lot of theory into a very smooth sounding package.
They can be surprisingly hard to untangle!
